Introducing our innovative bait protection device. The LureGard™ stops mice from eating your lures, ensuring that your traps remain effective.

The egg shape and colour is highly attractive to stoats and rats and fits into the standard egg holder of conventional traps. It will also protect your lure from the rain.

The white, shiny surface reflects moonlight, making it more visible in dim light and easier for stoats and rats to find your traps at night.

Additionally, it doubles as a convenient scoop for pellet baits.

Upgrade your trapping with our all-in-one lure protection device, and see the difference in your results.

LureGard™ is a registered trademark of Trap Tools Ltd.
NZ Patent Number 803163

LureGard™ Instructions

  1. Any baits that fit inside the device can be used e.g. Erayz, pellets, pieces of fresh meat, peanut butter etc.
  2. When closing the device, ensure that the grilles are together.
  3. Place the device on the egg holder so that it lies flat. Eggs do not normally sit upright in the nest.
  4. Place the device so that the grilles point away from the rear mesh of the trap box. This means that the bait is protected from the rain and it looks more like an egg from outside the trap.
  5. When removing the old bait, if there is mould left behind, clean this out with your finger.

  • Stoats LOVE eating eggs

And don't seem to notice that LureGard is not a real egg.

  • Hens' eggs are expensive

And fragile and perishable, and it’s hard to carry lots into the bush.

  • Mice loved our bait too much

Sometimes all the bait in a trap was gone within 24 hours.

  • Baiting traps is expensive

It's estimated the cost of rebaiting one trap per year is $100. Don't let mice steal your bait.

  • DOC traps do not target mice

There are just too many; so the traps are set to not go off for any animal under 50 grams.

  • Quick and easy to use

No need to remove your gloves when baiting the LureGard.

How to use LureGard

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the purpose of LureGard?

LureGard protects the bait from removal by mice. In the Doubtful Valley, trappers for the Doubtless Conservation Trust have  found that in high density mice areas the baits have been lost within two nights. With LureGard the baits are always there until the traps are next checked.

In what type of traps can the LureGard be used?

LureGard can be used in traps which have a clear space behind the trap. Typically this is DOC type traps. But LureGard can go in boxes that house Victor and T-Rex style traps if it is placed at the rear of the box.

Why not just use a tea-ball?

Tea-balls will also prevent mice taking the baits, but are fiddly to use in the bush with gloves on (you should always wear gloves to protect from disease and to keep your scent off the traps). Furthermore they will rust fairly quickly and no longer work.

Isn't the scent of mice attractive to mustelids?

Yes, but LureGard does not prevent investigation by mice. We normally prefeed in and around the traps, which attracts both mice and the target predators to interact with the trap.

Does the LureGard keep out wasps too?

Some users have reported that LureGard does keep out wasps, but we haven't tested the effectiveness of this yet.

What lure should I use in LureGard?

Just use whatever lure you usually use (provided it fits in). If it's a liquid lure, place it on the solid half of the LureGard.

They're made of plastic, so can they get damaged by rodents?

We manufacture the LureGards from polycarbonate, one of the hardest plastics, so they should not be affected by mouse activity. However, we have had reports that when the LureGards have bait in them but are not in a trap, they can suffer some damage (although it is not yet clear from what). This could also occur when the trap has been sprung and the bait is still fresh. In our experience in the Doubtful Valley, this has not yet been noticed in seven hundred LureGards over a season. If a LureGard is damaged sufficiently that it no longer functions as intended, please contact us.

How should I place the LureGard in my trap?

LureGard should be placed in the standard egg holder on its side to replicate how eggs would appear in the wild. The grilles should be facing each other and the solid half should face up and to the rear of the trap so that it protects the lure from rain and resembles a standard egg.

I struggle to open the LureGard; is there a knack?

Some people have reported the LureGard to be difficult to open. The grilles should face together  to ensure that the thumb tabs are atop each other. Then a  light squeeze on the thumb tabs will make it open easily.

My LureGard has disappeared from the trap! What do I do?

Very occasionally a LureGard may be removed from a trap which has been triggered: look around the trap as it probably hasn't been taken far. In the Doubtful/Nina we have only  lost 1 out of 700 traps over 6 months.

My LureGards blow around inside the trap box; what should I do?

In very windy areas the LureGard could move inside the trap. This can be stopped by screwing one half to the wall or base through the grille slots. The loose half can be removed for bait replacement. Alternatively you could put a metal weight inside.

How do I clean my LureGards?

If there is any residual mould inside the LureGard, this should be wiped out with a gloved finger.

Makes your bait last longer

LureGard has helped to keep wasps from taking the bait and the bait definitely seems to last longer.

Great success

In the Doubtful and Nina Valleys we are putting these in all our traps with increased success. LureGards prolong the life of the bait by excluding mice, plus the likeness to an egg is an attraction to mustelids.

Highly recommended!

This year we started using Luregards with fresh venison and they have been perfect for our needs. The LureGard design removes the need for any other visual stimuli, housing the venison safe from mice while allowing that fresh meat smell to permeate the trap. Carrying and installing the Luregards has also been a breeze. Highly recommended!
